Teen Council   08-09

Purpose: To provide leadership to community substance abuse prevention efforts through input on community issues and giving youth perspective for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of community strategies.

Composition:  Students from Garner-Hayfield High School

Qualifications:

*   Desire to make a difference for youth in our community

*   Willingness to be involved in community discussions and projects

*   Good communication skills

*   Follows through on projects

*   Able to take individual initiative and work as part of a team

Responsibilities:

*   Required attendance:  Monthly Teen Council meetings at school (Sept.-May)

                                                        One general GAP meeting per year

     High School Chair & Vice Chair:  All general GAP meetings

*   Active participation in Teen Council projects

*   Linkage to GAP adult committees

*   Represent GAP on community, regional and state groups
 

In 2005, this group led the successful passage of the Hancock County Beer Keg Registration Ordinance. In 2007, with other teens in the state, the Keg Registration became a state law.   In 2006, Teen Council was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Award.
