The JEL (Just Eliminate Lies) students from Garner-Hayfield and West Hancock came together for training on Halloween in Britt at the Teen Center.  The forty students that attended got to know each other, learned about JEL and how they can help fight big tobacco; they learned tobacco facts, watched a video and did two street marketing events.

The first street marketing event was crime scene chalk drawings where the students laid on the ground while another student drew the outline of their body with chalk.  They put tobacco facts beside the drawings and also labeled each of the bodies.  They put a number over 1200, because 1200 people die every day from tobacco related illnesses.

The second street marketing event they handed palm cards and bite size snickers out to people in the community and to students in their schools.  The palm cards had information on them about the big tobacco companies trying to enhance and improve the taste of cigarettes by flavoring them.  This marketing is directed at pre-teen and teenagers to get them to start smoking, get them hooked and then to need something stronger.  That is what JEL is all about, thousands of youth dedicated to giving Iowa teens the true, unfiltered facts about Big Tobacco’s lies, fighting against their constant attempts to addict us, and changing people’s attitudes about tobacco use.
