On Healthy Youth
Substance abuse among adults and youth in the Garner-Hayfield community results in risky behavior, lost productivity, poor school performance, and other negative outcomes. Garner Asset Project is a collaborative effort that provides support and leadership to numerous community sectors, including schools, churches, businesses, government, parents, and others.

By working together to resude substance abuse, we avoid duplication of services and resources, while uniting individuals who share common concerns.

GAP is a key community resource to promote community assesment and planning. The services and supports provided by GAP helps the community to combine resources and use strategies that are proven effective. The Garner Asset Project is helping to create a healthy community where all children, adults and families can thrive.
HISTORY
The Garner Asset Project (GAP) was established in 1991. Garner-Hayfield Community School District has taken the lead in coalition efforts and serves as the fiscal agent for GAP. The coalition operated on a 100% volunteer basis until 2003. Coalition funding, technical assistance, and other support has come from a Drug Free Communities Coalition Mentor Grant received by the Mason City Youth Task Force, Mason City, IA from October 2003 to 2005. The award of the DFC Mentoring Grant provided the opportunity to hire a Coordinator.  Currently, Garner Asset Project is federally funded by the Drug Free Communities Grant, SAMHSA.  State funding is through the Safe and Drug Schools Grant, Iowa Department of Public Health.  Local funding is throught the North Central Iowa Community Planning- Decatorgization Group, community/county organizations/businesses and individual donors.
